Ryde Light Installation, Done Properly

A room lives or dies on its lighting. Ageing downlights that have gone dull, a pendant left dangling where no one ever wanted it, a porch fitting that never worked right from day one.

We install and upgrade lighting across Ryde homes, from a single fitting to a whole-house LED changeover. Call (02) 9134 9026 for a free quote.

What We Handle Under Light Installation

Lighting jobs range from a five-minute fitting swap to a full rewire of the circuit behind it.

What we install regularly:

  • Downlights, LED retrofits and new ceiling cutouts where none exist yet
  • Pendants and feature fittings over kitchen islands, dining tables and stairwells
  • Dimmer switches, wired properly rather than bolted onto a circuit that wasn't designed for one
  • Outdoor and security lighting, including sensor-triggered fittings
  • Garden and landscape lighting runs, weatherproofed for Sydney's wet season
  • Beacon Lighting and SAL fittings stocked as our default, chosen for reliability over price

A lot of these get combined into one visit. A kitchen reno, for instance, often means new downlights over the bench, a pendant over the island and a couple of new switches, all on the same call-out.

Bathrooms are their own category, since fittings there need the right IP rating for moisture, and a standard downlight isn't suited to a shower zone. We'll spec the right rating for the space rather than fit whatever's already in the van.

How to Tell You Need Light Installation

Certain patterns show up again and again in the homes we visit.

  • A room only has one central light and every corner past it sits in shadow
  • Fittings are decades old, yellowed, or missing covers altogether
  • You want dimmers but the existing switches aren't wired to support them
  • An outdoor area has no lighting at all, or a sensor light that never trips reliably
  • A renovation has opened up a kitchen or living space that needs a fresh lighting plan
  • Old fluorescent tubes are due for an LED changeover to cut the power bill

None of these need a full rewire to fix. Most are a half-day job or less, once we know what's behind the ceiling.

The exception is a house that's been extended without touching the original lighting circuit. Adding six downlights to a circuit designed for one pendant sometimes means running a new circuit rather than piggybacking off the old one, and we'll flag that at the quote stage rather than after the ceiling's already open.

The Ryde Angle on Light Installation

Ryde's housing stock spans three distinct building waves, and each one wired its lighting differently.

Pre-1940 cottages often carry original ceiling roses built for a single pendant, nothing more.

Interwar and post-war brick houses added a light per room but rarely outdoor circuits. The 2000s apartment towers near Top Ryde arrived with downlights everywhere, but builder-grade fittings that fade fast.

Argyle Avenue is a good snapshot of the mix: older brick homes sitting a few doors from townhouses barely twenty years old, each needing a different lighting approach entirely.

We plan the job around which era we're working with, not a generic layout that ignores what's actually in the ceiling.

Light Installation Pricing: What Moves the Quote

The price on a lighting job moves on a few specific things.

  • The number of fittings, since one pendant and a dozen downlights are very different jobs
  • Ceiling access, with a flat concrete slab in an apartment taking longer than an open timber-framed roof
  • New cable runs, where the circuit doesn't already reach where you want a fitting
  • Fitting type, since a plain recessed downlight and a hard-wired statement pendant sit at opposite ends of the effort
  • Any switch or dimmer work bundled into the same visit

That ceiling-access point matters most on Argyle Avenue's older stock. A cottage roof space there is often tighter and harder to move through than a newer build, which can add time to running fresh cable for extra points.

Every quote is free and fixed before we touch a switch. $50 off if it's your first job with us.

How We Work Through a Light Installation Job

  1. Have a proper look. We check the existing fittings, hear what you're after, and work out where cable can realistically run.
  2. Quote it in writing. A price covers fittings, labour and testing, agreed before anything is installed.
  3. Install and check. Fittings go up, switches are wired properly, and every circuit gets tested before we pack up.
  4. Leave it tidy. Drop sheets come up, offcuts go with us, and you're left with a finished room, not a work site.

What NSW Requires for Light Installation

Wiring new lighting circuits counts as notifiable electrical work in NSW, so a Certificate of Compliance gets lodged with NSW Fair Trading once it's done.

A simple fitting swap on an existing point, where no new wiring is involved, doesn't always trigger the same paperwork. We explain which applies to your job before starting.

All work follows AS/NZS 3000 wiring rules, including correct cable sizing and safe clearances around insulation in ceiling spaces. DIY electrical work, including wiring a new light circuit yourself, is illegal in NSW.

What You Can and Can't Do Yourself

Swapping a lightbulb or a lampshade is fine. Anything past that gets murky fast.

Changing a light fitting where the wiring is already in place and the circuit is switched off sits in a grey area that most homeowners get wrong in practice, even if the rules technically allow limited fixed-appliance replacement in some states.

In NSW, connecting or altering wiring, including swapping a fitting where you're handling live conductors, is licensed electrical work. That covers new pendants, downlights, dimmer switches and anything involving a new circuit or cable run.

The risk isn't just the shock hazard on the day. Unlicensed work voids insurance if it ever causes a fire, and it has no Certificate of Compliance behind it if you sell the house.

If you're unsure whether a job is DIY-safe, the safest answer is to ask first. We'll tell you plainly if it's something you can do yourself.

Why This Is a Job for Our Team

One of our reviewers, Justine, mentioned how easy the booking process was and how ready the crew were to get straight into the job in front of them.

That kind of feedback matters more on the small jobs than the big ones. A single pendant doesn't come with the same fanfare as a full rewire, so it's easy for a smaller trade to treat it as an afterthought.

We don't. Fittings come from Beacon Lighting and SAL, picked because they keep their finish and their wiring long after a bargain-bin unit would have failed, and the job gets the same testing and paperwork as anything larger.

Related Work and Surrounding Areas

Light installation often gets booked alongside switchboard upgrades when an older board can't take the extra circuit, or ev charger installation when a garage rewire is already underway.

We work across Ryde and out into West Ryde, Meadowbank and Putney, where similar housing eras call for the same mix of fittings.

Common questions

Ryde Light Installation FAQs

What Ryde homeowners tend to ask before booking a lighting job.

How do I know it's time for light installation?

Fittings that have gone out of fashion, a kitchen bench with no task lighting, or a dark hallway you avoid at night are all common triggers. If you're reaching for a lamp to make a room usable, that room needs a proper light installed.

Can I supply my own gear, or do you bring the materials?

Either works. Bring your own fittings and we'll install them, or choose from Beacon Lighting and SAL ranges we fit as standard. We'll tell you honestly if a fitting you've bought isn't suited to the space before we install it.

Is a Certificate of Compliance included with light installation?

Yes, on any notifiable work, such as new circuits or wiring changes. A straightforward fitting swap on an existing point doesn't always trigger one, and we'll tell you which applies before we start.

What do you need from me on the day?

Clear access to the room and, for outdoor work, to the meter box or nearest switch. Let us know in advance if a ceiling space has restricted access, like a low attic or a tight roof void.

What does light installation usually cost?

It depends on the fitting type, how many are going in, and how much cable running is involved. We give a free written quote after seeing the job, with the price fixed before we start.

Does light installation work for apartments and strata in Ryde?

Regularly. Ryde's newer blocks around Top Ryde often need strata approval for any external or common-area lighting, and we handle that coordination as part of the job.
